Sacraments and Other Forms

Human salvation unfolds through God’s initiative to bridge the divide between God and humanity, first accomplished definitively in Jesus Christ, the one Mediator, whose redemption is made accessible to all through the Church. This saving work reaches its completion as Christ’s grace is applied to humanity through the sacraments, which are holy signs instituted by Christ as vehicles of grace. The Church teaches that there are seven sacraments, entrusted to her administration and necessary for salvation, which truly confer the grace they signify when validly celebrated with the proper intention, regardless of the personal worthiness of the minister, though not all may administer every sacrament. Distinct from these are sacramentals, which are instituted by the Church, derive their effectiveness from the Church’s intercession, and whose regulation and alteration are reserved to the Holy See.
